Mischievous Turtle Look & Development, 2022

Illustration

In Spring 2022, I took my first 2D animation course for fun. During our first project, each student individually developed a short animation. The goal was to animate an entrance, key moment, and then an exit for an animal.

My project focused on a turtle who was a mischievous scaredy-cat. He loves strawberries and snacks!

Early work on this project involved creating concepts for the animation. I worked on drafts for character designs, beat boards, and laying out my set to make the task of animating this project possible. I used references of turtles from the internet to design my little guy. I kept him round so that he could bounce easily if needed. I also wanted him to appear to be childlike and soft. His eyes are really big because I wanted to be able to make his face expressive, as well as his body.

Finalizing my designs focused on refining a unique silhouette for my turtle, and picking colors that would make him pop!

I used value studies to help me figure out different ways I could use color in my compositions.
