"111 Winchester" Kinetic Typography, 2021

This project was produced as part of my Motion Graphics coursework. I chose to animate an excerpt of “111 Winchester” by I the Mighty.

“111 Winchester” is song that tells a story about a haunted house and a party that goes wrong. It’s spooky and ominous, and best of all, based on an actual location that people can visit: The Winchester Mystery House.

It’s a home with hundreds of rooms, doors to nowhere, and confusing hallways. I knew a little bit about The Winchester House from Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural, and the movie named after the house itself, Winchester.

I looked to these sources for aesthetic input and basic information about the house, alongside other related media, to put together a style board that would guide the art direction for the animation.

Moving into the storyboarding process, I focused on the types of motions and effects I wanted to achieve using After Effects. I considered the lyrics of the song, and what motions might be most evocative.

Most images pictured in the animated clip were finalized in Adobe Illustrator before they were ever touched in After Effects. The goal was to create highly stylized and bold graphics, which resembled silhouettes or shadows.
